Dear Readers,
Today was a typical lazy Sunday. We slept in until 10:30, so the breakfast was all gone. We cut ourselves mango and ate cereal. Thus far, we have yet to wake up early enough to eat with company. Tomorrow we will probably be waking up too early. 6:30- ahhh! But with the large eye-bags and headaches, comes excitement; tomorrow will be our first day working at the school.
Speaking of school, this afternoon we met with the headmistress, Mrs. K. She is one of the most inspirational and driven women we have met. She started the school to teach girls to be self-reliant, so they would learn not to rely on men. The school was started in her own home with three girls as pupils. Two of these girls had younger brothers. She felt the need to educate the siblings as well, and decided to make the school co-ed. The school has grown in numbers, and has been moved to a new house.
Before our journey, we watched a movie with our housemates. When the time came where one of the main characters had to receive stitches in rural Morocco, the medical students didn't flinch. On the other side of the couch, we (Mattie and Emilia) squirmed and squealed.
Looking forward to our first day of school!
Mattie and Emilia
Hi Mattie & Emilia. David shared your blog with me and I can see that your entries will allow me to revisit and reflect on my time in Mbarara from 2009 when I, too, was fortunate enough to work with Mrs. K., a.k.a. MIWIU (me-whee-oooh), the MOST INSPIRING WOMAN IN UGANDA. (She does not know I call her that.)
ReplyDeletePlease tell her that it is only lack of funding, not desire, that has kept me from returning to her school to direct another play. Who knows, maybe you guys will put a show together when you are there. Something to do with fossils? The kids I met there LOVED dancing and singing so don't be afraid to teach them some songs. I don't know you, Emilia, but I am fairly confident that my young friend Mattie will not fear this MIWIU-endorsed (and absolutely legal) activity. Have a blast with the kids, and don't forget to season your g-nuts.

Harris! Of course we will relay your message. Mrs. K told us about how great you were with the kids. Hope we can live up to you! And don't worry, Emilia and I aren't afraid to jam out.
